Why you should take auto glass damage seriously

Some wear and tear on your vehicle is inevitable. Tires can throw rocks up to the bodywork and dings and scrapes from all sorts of minor accidents are just a fact of life. Bad things can happen to your car no matter how careful you are. Most of us will have to deal with it if we want to use our cars for daily commuting.

Damage to your car’s windows and windshields, on the other hand, can be a more serious matter than a scratch on the finish or a dent in the bodywork. While your safety isn’t necessarily compromised by dings and scrapes on your car’s body, even a small crack on your windows should be a cause for concern. And we’re not just talking about how they look, either.

Damaged windows and windshields aren’t just ugly and annoying, they’re extremely unsafe as well. Not only will broken windshields and windows impede your vision, but damaged auto glass can also significantly increase the risk to your car’s occupants as well.

In a modern automobile, the glass actually does more than prevent dust and debris from getting inside your vehicle. The windshield and rear windows are also responsible for transferring some of the force of an impact into your car’s chassis, reducing the potential for severe injury to the occupants inside.

If a window or windshield is compromised by cracks, the force of an impact isn’t transferred to the chassis as efficiently, if at all. Your windows may just shatter rather than transmit the impact forces into the body like it was designed to do. This means an accident that would be otherwise survivable might turn out to be downright lethal if your car’s windshield or windows are damaged.

One case where damaged glass can be catastrophic is during a roll-over. Damaged windshields will usually shatter, causing the roof to cave in and seriously injure the occupants – or worse. An intact windshield can prevent this from happening, greatly increasing the odds of surviving this type of accident.

An intact windshield is also necessary in many modern cars in order to ensure proper airbag deployment. An airbag can burst through a damaged windshield, which can reduce its effectiveness for protecting the car’s occupants. In some cases, the airbag may even deploy outside the vehicle, as may be the case with some trucks and cars where the airbag is designed to deploy towards the top of the vehicle and bounce off the windshield.

Thankfully our team at Upland Windshield Repair & Window Tinting has the experience and know-how to correctly diagnose, repair, and replace all kinds of window and windshield damage.

It all starts with an assessment

We understand that not everyone can afford complete auto glass replacements. In many cases, complete auto glass replacements can be expensive, and sometimes unnecessary. Not all auto glass damage has the potential to compromise your car’s safety and a lot of minor damage can actually be repaired.

Unfortunately, not everyone can correctly assess car window and windshield damage. This means some shops will repair glass that should already be replaced because of possible safety issues. Then there is the opposite problem. Quite a few dishonest shops will also pressure you into replacing windows that could be repaired, simply because they could pad the invoice a bit more.

Thanks to our diagnostics process, we can accurately assess if repairs or complete replacements are necessary. We’ll give you the real deal about your auto glass damage and give you recommendations that have both your safety and your budget in mind.

Repair

Our team uses state-of-the-art techniques and equipment to repair your car’s windows or windshield. We use a vacuum injection pump to draw all the air out of the damaged parts before we apply a clear resin. This ensures all the invisible microcracks and fissures in the glass are properly filled in, preventing the damage from spreading. We then use UV light to cure the resin, which hardens it and restores the look and much of the structural integrity of the glass.

The Repair of Laminative Automotive Glass Standard guide, published by the National Windshield Repair Association, gives different types of vehicle glass damage can be repaired. Be sure to check out the guide for an idea of which types of damage can be repaired and which types will require a complete replacement.

Replacement

For more severe damage, we will recommend a replacement. We will also recommend replacements in cases where the damage is in the driver’s direct line of sight, as repairs do have the possibility of impeding visibility in some cases, even when they’re mostly invisible.

Damage of certain types or dimensions will also warrant replacement, as does damage that extends to the edge of the windshield. These types of damage are particularly serious as they can compromise the integrity of the vehicle and the safety of the occupants.

To ensure your safety and to restore your vehicle’s windows to an “as new” condition, we only use the best quality replacement glass and we use industry standard procedures. We also take precautions to ensure your replacement windshields and windows are matched perfectly for your vehicle.

Removing old glass can be tricky too. Thankfully, our experienced technicians have years of experience removing and replacing different window and windshield types in every scenario you can think of.
